Get Your High School Diploma, GED, or Equivalent

Before entering the field, you must fulfill the fundamental electrician job qualifications. To register for a formal apprenticeship training agreement, the legal electrician education requirements in Ontario dictate a minimum of a Grade 10 education. However, most employers prioritize candidates with an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent, especially those with high school credits in trade mathematics, physics, and English.

If you want to learn how to get into electrical work with no experience, a pre-apprenticeship program is the best path. Attending an intensive program at a dedicated trade school teaches aspiring electrical apprentices foundational blueprint reading, wiring fundamentals, and critical jobsite safety protocols. While not mandatory, this in school training transforms you into an competitive applicant, making it much easier to secure a legal employer sponsor.

Gain Work Experience (Electrical Apprenticeship)

To officially practice the trade, you must complete a registered electrical apprenticeship administered by Skilled Trades Ontario. Your apprenticeship training program consists of a mandatory 9,000 total apprentice training hours (approximately five years):

• On-the-Job Experience: 8,160 hours working directly under the supervision of a licensed mentor.

• In-School Training: 840 hours of formal in-school training blocks to master complex code applications and electrical theory.

Because the electrical trade is a compulsory trade in Ontario, you can’t work independently without a license. Once your hours are approved by Skilled Trades Ontario, you have to take the provincial qualification exam.

Achieving a grade of 70% or higher awards you your Certificate of Qualification (CofQ), officially certifying you as a journeyperson!
